Summary
Chapter 19 takes place Wednesday, March 10, at Nanticoke Island, Maryland. Margaret remembers the letters Charlie wrote while he was in the war. He had written about the horrors of one of the training fields, knowing that this is probably nothing compared to what awaits them. She thinks about that after plunging into the ocean to try to save a foal that followed his parents into the water. It became clear the foal would not make it. Margaret was the only member of the team who took action. She is struggling to stay afloat against the pull of the current when Charlie takes on the weight, swimming them to shore.
Chapter 20 picks up shortly after Charlie's rescue. His need to see Margaret drove him to make the trip to Nanticoke Island. It was difficult to reach the place but easy to find the camp. Charlie...
