Summary
Chapter 16 takes place Saturday, March 6, the day after the wreck. Charlie visits Street's house and tells him everything, including handing the dossier over to Bob Kennedy and waking up after the wreck. Charlie says the girl who was preparing the absinthe drinks was dead in the ditch. Charlie feels weak as he tries to justify his decision not to go directly to the police, saying he did not want to be judged on this mistake. They discuss the difference between a theoretical situation in which someone has to choose between two bad options and this real-life situation. Street eventually agrees he understands why Charlie made his decision. Meanwhile, Margaret is back in the field. Gwinnett and another researcher talk about Communism. Margaret refuses to say how Charlie stands on the subject. Margaret uses a pair of newly-purchased night-vision binoculars to watch the ponies...
