Summary
Chapter 4 is set Friday afternoon, just a few hours after the previous chapter. Bernstein (Charlie's intern) accompanies Charlie on the monorail to Senate Office Building, sometimes called the SOB. He gives Bernstein the paper he found, asking her to see what she can find out about it without letting Leopold in on her research. Charlie and Bernstein part ways when Charlie enters Kefauver's office. Charlie surprises himself by saying “I myself would have gone for you over Ike had you not been cheated out of the nomination” (29). Charlie knows it is not true and cannot imagine why he said it. They drink together then Kefauver brings up the Goodstone issue, trying to make Charlie realize why Carlin is so angry. Charlie makes it clear he will not back down. Kefauver says he admires that Charlie is willing to stand for what he believes...
