In Chapter 13, Crott, Thaniel, Cathaline, Alaizabel, and Devil-boy Jack gather at in Crott's chambers. The rooms are gaudy, overdecorated with trinkets, furniture, and shiny things. They drink a toast to Grindle. Crott says that something dark is afoot in London, and has been ever since the Vernichtung. What is bad for London is also bad for Crott and his men. Crott wants to know everything Thaniel and the others know about the darkness; in exchange he has arranged a meeting for the following day, during which Alaizabel will learn about her past.
