Chapter 5, What's A Girl Like Me? Summary and Analysis
After Carl moves to Brazil, Xaviera becomes despondent and consoles herself through sexual encounters with men. Her roommate Sonia becomes annoyed with this behavior at times. Eventually, to Xaviera's relief, one of the men she is sleeping with invites her to Miami for a long weekend. She feels refreshed after getting away from New York and meets a charming Englishman named Evelyn St. John on the flight back. He invites her to dinner and she ends up staying at his hotel for the week he is in town. She is surprised when he gives her a hundred dollars before he leaves. He tells her to give it to her parents and gives her a lecture about having greater self-worth. He says she deserves to have men take care of her financially...
