Chapter 4, Dutch Treat Summary and Analysis
Xaviera arrives in New York and is picked up at the airport by Carl, who treats her very coldly. He takes her to his penthouse in the East Seventies neighborhood in New York, which she notes is barely decorated and does not appear very lived-in. Carl says he must meet his mother and leaves, promising to return at six. When he does not return until ten she is extremely upset but takes no action. He leaves early for work and still has not returned by ten that evening when the phone rings. Xaviera answers and discovers that the woman on the other line is Rona Wong, Carl's secret second fiancee, a woman from Jamaica. Xaviera goes to Rona's apartment to talk with her and discovers that Carl had convinced Rona to move to New York to marry...
