Summary

Part II begins with Chapter 20. Chapter 20 picks up later in 2017. After four months of training, Lou feels Sera lacks focus and decides she has ADD. He sends her to a doctor who asks no questions before prescribing Adderall. This begins the daily routine of Lou giving Sera the pill every morning before practice. She describes the Adderall as making images come to life. She describes the “fire” that can be destructive but also cleansing.

When Bob objects to the Adderall, Charlene points out that Sera has not attended school recently and may have “developed ADD.” Sera is torn over her father's reaction, finding herself grateful that he believes she is fine without the medicine. Bob takes a drink of whiskey, makes a veiled comment about Eddie's medical practices, and says, “We all know it doesn't matter what I think” (211). They briefly discuss that...
