Summary

Chapter 6 picks up the following spring in May of 2013. Sera lists a few events of the previous months, including Obama's second inauguration, ending as she always does with “And we trained and we trained and we trained” (76). Sera, who is now 13, has a new pain in her leg amid all the typical pain. Jennifer has been worried about the toll of training 40 hours a week. Sera wonders if her body is already “burned out.” When she cannot continue with training one day, an orthopedic specialist confirms a problem with a growth plate caused by overuse. She is ordered to rest. Charlene argues that Sera is in the middle of competitions. Sera recalls that Eddie had not forced Lucy to sit out.
