Witch's Mark

On all five of the orphans is found a mark that resembles the symbol for Venus, a symbol that at the time was associated with witches. It is later revealed that it is the alchemy symbol for hematite written upside down. The children used the symbol to bind themselves together and protect themselves from the cruelty of other children.

The burghers are the good people of Schongau.

Jakob Kuisl uses thumb screws to torture Martha Stechlin in order to force her to confess.

Mandrake is a root that is used by witches in potions. The mandrake is also used by some to make a potion to reduce pain and induce sleep.
