Schongau
Schongau is the village where Jakob Kuisl and his family live. It is in Schongau where Peter Grimmer is found murdered and Martha Stechlin is arrested for being a witch. Schongau is a small village in Bavaria, but it is the hub of trade route, a fact that is seen with much jealousy by nearby village, Altenstadt. It is this fight between the two villages that causes a great deal of tension in the novel, especially when the Zimmerstadel is burned.
Altenstadt
Altenstadt is a nearby village that is in competition with Schongau for the trade route. Altenstadt is also where one of the young orphans lives, necessitating a trip to the distant village for Simon and Jakob Kuisl.
