Point of View

The Half Moon is written from a third person limited point of view, through the perspective of Malcolm and Jess Gephardt, a separated couple. At the outset of the narrative, the author grants the reader access to Malcolm’s internal thoughts and emotions as he closes the bar before the snowstorm and learns that Jess is in a relationship with Neil. Later on, Keane explores Jess’s personal frustrations and grief as she questions whether she wants to pursue a life with her new partner. The author choses to explore the internal perspective of by characters in order to expand her thematic exploration of love and family. While Malcolm and Jess both experience loss, grief, and emotional distance in their partnership, their experiences are not mirrors of one another. Malcolm feels distant from his wife because he is not the one facing the medical complications...
