Summary
Part 3 begins with the only subsection in the novel told from the Colonel’s perspective. In his delusional state, the Colonel has a flashback of being promoted at a party in the Castle to “heir apparent” of Admiral Marshall, Leslie’s father (218). However, this is not just a memory as he has actually gone to the Castle in the middle of the night.
Jules is “visited” by his deceased father more often as he becomes increasingly skeptical of Leslie’s motives for moving back to the island (220). His father says, “You can’t trust a person who changes as fast as that girl did. One day, white. The next, trying to pass like she was born and raised in the ‘hood” (221). An internal conflict increases within Jules as his father’s words rival his own, more logical thoughts. Jules...
