The guests freeze. They stare at one another. They are suddenly afraid again. More so than they were when the lights went out. They all know what they are hearing. It is a scream of terror.

Importance: Foley introduces her plot in the present with the wedding guests learning that there has been a murder. The unstable electricity and storm outside the tents in which the wedding is being held add to the drama of the opening section.

Importance: Charlie assures Hannah that Will is not the person Jules believes that he is. Ironically, Charlie is correct. However, at the time, Hannah believes that Charlie is speaking out of jealousy because he and Jules had been such good friends for so long.
