Summary
This section opens with Len searching for Joan in Penn Station. He eventually runs into her with Moss, much to his surprise. Both Joan and Len realize how this complicates matters as he is Jewish, and her father is his boss. Len and Joan begin a passionate affair, their chemistry apparent. She tries to educate him on culture at the Met, yet it is apparent he is self-assured and wants only to please her, not be accepted to the elitist club. Meanwhile, Reg is forced to find other companionship in Len's absence and spends some time with Moss. Moss, ever the idealist, speaks to Reg of a diverse America and how he feels change in the air. Although Reg is intrigued by the idea, he is a realist and is skeptical of Moss's vision.
