Point of View
The point of view of the novel is a first-person narrative of Lobbi. He is a 22-year old man leaving home. Lobbi is eager to make his way out into the world and begin his job taking care of a garden at a monastery.
From Lobbi’s perspective, most of what is around him is new. He compares much of what he sees and interacts with to what he already knows. When Lobbi is sidelined with a bout of appendicitis, he thinks about the nurse seeing him nude and puts her on a mental list of the women he has slept with because they saw him nude as well. When Lobbi is unable to order from a menu because he does not know much of the language, he defers to a woman to order and she stands in like a de facto mother for him...
