Summary
In Chapter 16, Lobbi purchases a car and buys soil for his rose cuttings. He gets a map, water, and a sandwich at a gas station. He calls and checks in with his dad, and Dad warns him that “there are lots of temptations for men abroad” (53). Dad asks about another recipe, and Lobbi tells him that halibut soup can be challenging. Lobbi heads out, planning on five days of travel.
Chapter 17 opens with Lobbi on the road. He worries that his memories of his mother are fading and is concerned about the wildlife in the woods around him. He feels bad for his dad because the last person Mom spoke to was Lobbi, and Dad felt that it should have been him. He remembers the phone call she made, explaining that there was a car accident and that she was waiting on paramedics...
