Point of View

The novel is written mostly from the first person perspective of Cal Lewis, a bisexual teenager roughly assumed to be 17 years old, or in the summer before his senior year of high school. Stamper uses an intimate style that breaks the fourth wall for Cal’s perspective to build a relationship with the reader. For instance, when he needs to talk to his parents he writes, “I bust into my parents’ bedroom - the door was open, don’t worry - and find him taking a nap” (246). This infers that the reader and Cal have a relationship as Cal is gauging the reaction of a young adult reader thinking he burst into his parents room without knocking.
