Summary
Chapter 8 further examines the relationship dynamics between Arthur, Don, Brian, and the twins. Those five characters sometimes become competitive or slightly derisive towards each other, but they ultimately love each other. Sally and Paula usually act as more casual observers, alternately annoyed and amused by the other characters’ interactions. In Chapter 9, it is 1970, and the twins are in their late teens. Daphne recently lost her virginity—consensually, with her boyfriend—and she has mixed feelings about the event. The narrative states that Daphne has grown to be the more dramatic and demonstrative of the sisters. Daphne is somewhat happy that she lost her virginity before Laurel. However, Laurel actually already lost her virginity and simply did not tell Daphne. Laurel decides to keep this secret for the time being so as not to upset Daphne.
