Summary
In Chapter 73, when Tierney returns to camp, she is dragged over to the lodging house to see Helen’s pet dove has had its neck snapped, and written in blood above it is the word “whore” (332). Placed on the dove is a yellow nasturtium, which symbolizes betrayal. Tierney asks where Helen is, and the girls say they saw her enter the woods wearing Tierney’s cloak. Tierney bolts and soon finds Helen’s lifeless body with a ribbon tied around her neck.
In Chapter 74, back at camp, Tierney tells the girls that a poacher has killed Helen because he mistook Helen for herself. Tierney decides to wait for the poacher in the woods to stop him once and for all.
