Fonds-Zombi
Fonds-Zombi is the arrondissement in Martinique where Pascal spends much of his childhood and coming of age. After Pascal becomes acquainted with his birth mother Fatima, he becomes increasingly desperate to leave Fonds-Zombi. He feels frustrated with himself for never having experienced the world outside of his home island. Although he has always loved Martinique, when he begins reading about new places, particularly Brazil, he makes plans to visit South America and track down his father.
Over the course of the novel, Pascal repeatedly leaves and returns to Fonds-Zombi. Following his initial departure and return to this location, Pascal is shocked by how much the place has changed. Everything that was once familiar about his hometown has been dismantled or altered. The older he gets, the less inclined he feels to spend long periods of time here.
