Pascal
Pascal is the main character of the novel. His biological parents are Maya, later known as Fatima, and Corazón. Because Maya is incapable of contacting Corazón during her pregnancy, she feels she has no choice but to abandon Pascal immediately after his birth. Shortly thereafter, Jean Pierre and Eulalie Ballandra discover Pascal, bring him home, and adopt him as their son.
Over the course of Pascal's childhood and coming of age, he is weighed by the expectations of his community. Because of his mysterious origins, people have spread rumors about his alleged divinity. Pascal therefore grows up feeling as if he must change the world for the better.
