Summary
In Chapter 39, Pascal received a letter “from Sarojini’s secretary” inviting him to “give a lecture at the ashram as part of her world tour” (206). She was advocating for a young girl who had murdered her husband after being forced to marry a 75-year-old.
However, “a few weeks later,” Pascal learned that the tour had been canceled after the young girl’s murder (208). Pascal “sunk in grief,” unsure if he should return home (209). Espíritu urged him to go to Corazón’s house in San Isabel. Corazón regularly went there to solve his problems. Pascal felt glad for the escape.
In Chapter 40, Pascal founded a school in San Isabel (212). He hired a young woman named Awa to help with the students. Their relationship evolved from “work companions” to lovers (213). They often had intense political and religious conversations.
