Summary
In Chapter 11, throughout Eulalie’s funeral, Pascal was plagued by grief and guilt. To distract himself, he went out to a bar with Lazare, Judas, “and a few other friends” afterwards (70).
In Chapter 12, Pascal received “a letter from the Bon Kaffé establishment,” signed by Judas and David Druot (71). In spite of Maria’s warnings not to get involved with them, Pascal decided to accept their invitation for a meeting. He traveled to Sagalin. He was overwhelmed by the village’s filth, having believed it was where “the change he was so hoping for would start” (73).
The men discussed Pacheco’s unwillingness to reform. While he was away in Japan, they hoped “to do everything possible . . . to achieve better relations with the company” (74). Pascal agreed to help and began giving lectures. He tried to embrace honesty, as “truth and knowledge” promoted change (75).
