Josh Swensen is the protagonist and main character of THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LARRY. The story is told from his viewpoint. He is 17 years old and lives in Maine with his stepfather, Peter. Josh's mother died three years previously. Josh is in love with his best friend, Beth. In A Note To The Reader, Josh approaches Janet Tashjian at the grocery store and asks her to help him publish his manuscript. After reading it, she agrees because she believes his story is important. He disappears again before she can provide him with copies of the published book.
