Summary

Section 9 of Chapter 2 is titled, “Thursday. Dog Watches: 1600 – 2000.” As Krause returns to the bridge he overhears a young seaman referring to him as “‘the Kraut’” (206). This confirms his suspicions that this had become his nickname. When he arrives back on the bridge he is met by Cole and by the ship’s doctor, who reports on the dead and injured. As Krause is preparing to return his attention to the operations of the ship, Cole reminds him that there is a need to arrange for the at-sea burials of the dead crew. He has also arranged for a tray of food and coffee to be brought, and urges Krause – “‘Please, sir’” – to eat (208).
