Summary

Section 3 of Chapter 2 is titled “Wednesday. Dog Watches: 1600 – 2000.” Krause becomes aware that the watch has changed again. He orders Lieutenant Cole to make sure that the men currently off-duty get hot food, and reminds himself to not overtax his crew – there is a battle with the wolf pack of U-boats ahead. He orders that the Keeling speed up and resume its place at the head of the convoy, and meanwhile orders some food and coffee from the galley.

As the food arrives, Krause learns that one of the other ships in the convoy is under fire from a U-boat. As he orders the ship be moved to attack the U-boat, one of the other boats in the convoy fires, but in the darkness is unable to clearly see the difference between the U-boat and the Keeling.
