Valley, Ireland, 1825-6
The valley is a beautiful Irish landscape that is home to a small community perched on its peak. They are isolated and far from the nearest city. Many of the members are related, mostly by marriage, and are publicly loyal despite being privately conniving. A local Catholic priest lives in the community, but its members still believe in the folkloric traditions of old. They understand that the natural world around them has medicinal properties and believe it also holds spiritual or mystical power. The majority of the novel is set here over the course of a year, taking the reader through each season.
