Scott Nearing
One of the authors and the husband of the cooperative family unit that farms first in Vermont and later in Maine. Scott is a dedicated person with some definite ideas about what makes up this "good life" he is seeking. He is also very different from what many would consider the "normal man" of the period, preferring to live a life away from the materialistic world in which many people are caught up. Scott instead believes that a life free of materialistic or worldly possessions is preferable. One of his main goals in the establishment of the Vermont farm is to escape the financial aspects of the outside world in which most people are dependent on wage jobs in order to provide basic necessities.
