Summary

In Chapter 13, Sam asked Lenore about her mother as they sat alone in a diner. Lenore said that Gamma had not liked Lenore because she kept Rusty out late drinking instead of spending time with his family. She explained that Gamma seemed to be trying to make a conventional life for herself.

Later, when Sam stood in the bathroom of the diner she saw her mother’s look of bitter disappointment in her face. Because Charlie would not talk to Sam at all, Sam was going back to New York and was going to give up on her sister. She told herself that Charlie did not need her and probably never had. Sam wondered if Zach was somehow responsible for her sister’s behavior. She had some of his letters in her purse. They all read “YOU OWE ME” (360).
