Summary
In the section Day 9, Daphne wakes feeling more resolved. Alice is anxious to leave, disinterested in breakfast. In the car, Alice tells Daphne more about the camp, and all the horrible jobs her husband and the other CO's were made to do. As they near Cooville, Alice tells more stories without prodding. She talks about her trip to Diyarbakır with her husband. Daphne says that was where Ellery died. Alice attempts easing Daphne's guilt.
Finally they find the camp, driving over messy ground to reach the collapsing structures below. Alice insists Daphne leave her by herself. When Daphne says she and Honey will wait in the car, Alice says she wants Daphne to leave altogether. Daphne grows worried.
