Chapter 11
Six months later. Mickey has been working on several cases, but finds himself back on the La Cosse case. Mickey is in court trying to have the interrogation tape thrown out on the grounds that the police had effectively placed La Cosse under arrest when they first brought him into the police station, but he was not read his Miranda rights until after their interrogation. Mickey does not expect to win the motion. When the hearing is over, the prosecutor, Forsythe, makes a third attempt to get Mickey to agree to a plea, but Mickey refuses. Before leaving the courthouse, Mickey goes to speak with La Cosse. La Cosse tells him that Gloria said a short time before she died that Mickey would go to bat for her if anything happened to her.
