Book 9, Chapter 32 Summary
In the wake of the failed assassination attempt, President Shea deals with the political backlash. Furious and out of the loop, James Kavanaugh Shea would love nothing more than to confront his father about how he co-opted the CIA under his own son's nose, but the Ambassador is felled by a stroke. He is still alive, but he can no longer speak. Publicly, the government points out that Carmine Marino is an Italian national with ties to organized crime. The attorney general scoffs at the accusation that the CIA was involved. The FBI Director, long in the Corleones' pocket, helps in the cover up. Cuba drags its feet on extraditing Carmine Marino, and eventually he is reported to have been shot during an escape attempt. No one questions this story.
