Pilgrim's Car Accident
Pilgrim's car accident has nothing to do with an actual car but actually symbolizes a person's past mistakes. Harry confirms this symbol most clearly when he reminds Gloria that everyone has a past and many of the past stories contain a regret or a mistake. Pilgrim's mistake is at the forefront of this story because she is the protagonist. Her actions haunt her on a personal level, which makes her feel selfish at some points in the narrative. Likewise, however, Gloria and Harry also have past actions they regret. Both characters feel as though they took human life, and we know that Pilgrim is responsible for the same thing. The car accident is a symbol for the past mistakes and decisions every person drags along with them as they progress through their lives.
