Summary
This chapter details Inspector Paul Strebel’s actions regarding the investigation of Pilgrim’s car accident in Arnau, Switzerland.
Strebel arrives at the hospital before meeting with Pilgrim. He sees the grieving parents, and he is focused on Mr. Koppler, Sophie’s father. The man lost his wife earlier in the year to cancer and now he has lost his daughter as well. He seems particularly lost and shaken up. Strebel tries to meet with Pilgrim, but she is out of the apartment the first time he comes by. Mrs. Gassner is impolite to him and behaves strangely. Strebel suspects that someone, who is not Pilgrim, is up in the apartment but he has no proof so he drives off.
