Summary

The chapters in this section alter between Pilgrim’s continued agony in Arnau and her exploration in Tanga, Tanzania. The chapters related to Arnau take place from March 20 to April 18 while the chapters related to Pilgrim’s time in Tanga are from May 21 to May 28.

Detective Paul Strebel arrives at Pilgrim’s home late at night and seems nervous. The two of them have sex for the first, and only, time; and, afterwards, Paul insists that Pilgrim should make a more solid statement declaring the car accident as an innocent accident. He encourages her to say that an unleashed dog ran out into the slick road and Pilgrim swerved to avoid hitting it.
