Summary
In Chapter 12, “The Counterlife” (222), the novel shifts back to Jonathan's perspective from prison. He thinks he sees a former associate, Yvette Bertolli, out in the yard. Yvette introduced her own clients to Jonathan and they invested millions with him. She looks just as she did in the 1980s when Jonathan first met her. Later, he thinks he sees Olivia while in line at the commissary. Next time he is visited by Julie Freeman, the author, he asks her to look Olivia up online for him. When she returns, she tells him that Olivia has died. Julie asks about Ella Kaspersky, and Jonathan recalls meeting her at the Hotel Caiette and convincing her to invest her inheritance with him. Before actually doing so, however, she did research on investments and discovered that the returns Jonathan was promising were essentially impossible. She reported Jonathan's firm...
