Summary

Chapter 4, “A Fairy Tale” (56), is set in 2005-2008. After leaving her job at the Hotel Caiette, Vincent moved to Greenwich, Connecticut to live with Jonathan Alkaitis as his wife, though they were not technically married. She was 24 and he was 58. She spent most of her time swimming in his pool and taking the train into Manhattan, where she shopped, visited art museums, and frequented cafes. Vincent met Alkaitis' daughter, Claire, who was five years older than her. She told Claire she was named after the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, which caused her to think of her mother. Alkaitis had also lost someone—his first wife, Suzanne, of whom he rarely spoke. Vincent adapted well to Jonathan's life and wealthy friends, and even liked him, though she did not love him. She bought an expensive video camera and reflected on the first one...
