Summary

In Chapter 57, when Direct Care allows Anna and Matthias to extend their visiting hours, they sleep together in Bedroom 5. The girls from the treatment center go on an outing to the salon in Chapter 58. While Anna does not want to get a manicure, “the very triviality of the outing feels like a gulp of air after being held under water” (259). She imagines being like the other women at the salon, who will get coffee and return home.

In Chapter 59, Anna woke up early for ballet practice with the company. At rehearsal she did not receive a desirable role and skipped lunch in hopes of being better for Philippe.

In therapy, in Chapter 60, Anna asks Katherine if she heard from Valerie. Her therapist cannot disclose information about another patient, but she encourages Anna to talk about herself. The narrator is still not comfortable...
