Ikati Village
The first chapters of the novel take place in Ikati, a small village in rural Nigeria. Adunni and her family were raised here in a small house where her and her two brothers share a bed. It being the only physical asset the family has as an economic resource, and the house falls into disrepair once Adunni’s mother dies. The house is a symbol of their family life also becoming troubled and broken. There is a strong sense of community and accountability acting as the central driving force between all relationships in Ikati village, and the community is led by a chief who oversees that the local rules are well-maintained.
