Summary
Chapter 19 begins with Adunni running towards the next village, Agan, “where Iya was telling me to come to her if I am ever needing her help” (112). She buys a motorcycle ride to Iya’s house on Kasumu Road and finds her mother’s old friend who is blind, in a decrepit state of illness and malnutrition. Iya offers to help by seeking a job opportunity abroad from her brother Kola. But in the night before Kola arrives, Papa arrives angry, and while Iya covers for her, Adunni anxiously hides in a poo-covered toilet room, asking “where can I go to disappear and never be finding myself?” (120). Kayus searches the room and is the only one to spot her in hiding but pretends not to see Adunni standing amidst the feces and flies. They say goodbye silently and tearfully and Kayus and Papa leave...
