Summary
In Chapter 13, it is Sunday, August 8, 1886 at McElroy Farm on Orcas Island. Mei Lien is thrilled being married to Joseph. She makes him a custom mailbag. She and Joseph take a hike to the top of Mount Constitution to see the beautiful view. However, the sight of the water makes Mei Lien sad. As Mei Lien considers Joseph, she realizes she has fallen in love with him. On the way down the mountain, Mr. and Mrs. Honeycutt and Mr. and Mrs. Talmidge stop to speak with Joseph and Mei Lien. All four are cruel toward Mei Lien, saying they do not like “her kind” on the island. Joseph defends Mei Lien, saying that when the four are ready to apologize, they will be at their farm.
