Summary
In the prologue, it was 2006, and Clemantine was 18 when she and her sister, Claire, were invited onto the Oprah show. While Claire lived in public housing with her three children, Clemantine had been living in Kenilworth, "a fancy suburb," with the Thomas family (1). The Oprah segment was "a two-part series" (2). In the first part, Oprah talked to Elie Wiesel. The second part featured 50 high schoolers who had participated in Oprah's essay contest "about Wiesel's book Night" (2). In Clemantine's essay, she had compared her experiences in Rwanda to those of Wiesel's in Auschwitz.
During the show, Oprah gave Clemantine and Claire a surprise reunion with their family. The sisters had not seen their parents or siblings in over a decade. Claire was in shock. Clemantine had imagined this moment many times (6). She ran to her parents and siblings.
