Summary

Chapter 1 takes place on Wednesday, April 12. It opens in Brookdale, a mental hospital, with a man named Titus escorting the narrative's protagonist, Faith, to the office of Dr. Rodgers. While in the office, Dr. Rodgers and Faith talk about using counting as a coping mechanism when Faith feels anxious. Then Dr. Rodgers tells Faith that the police would like to talk to her. Faith does not understand why because she says that no one believes her when she affirms that her father did not kill Faith’s sister, Kim, a family friend, Mrs. Foster, and Mrs. Foster’s daughter, Anna. The local police have closed the case. Dr. Rodgers convinces her to cooperate.
