Chapters 18 and 19 Summary

"The Lonely Gaol" Narration describes how violent, angry storms circle the Lonely Gaol, formed by when the monster beneath the surface of the world breathes in crystal and breathes it out in giant bubbles that layer together to form the gaol. Gleam helps September navigate the waves, and eventually the raft runs aground at the base of a castle studded with towers. September sends Gleam to search for Ell and Saturday while she tries to figure out a way in. She remembers the power of the Spoon, finds a pool of water, and uses the Spoon to create the sort of soup that the witches used to tell the future. The pool/soup reveals that September can get in by showing the Wrench to the lions guarding the main door - the Wrench, she realizes, still has the power of Queen...
