Structure
The Gifts of Imperfection is divided into several sections. First, there is a preface which outlines how Brown came to the theory of Wholeheartedness. Because it is placed before the book's acknowledgements, it is physically and intellectually quite separate from the rest of the book, even more so than a usual preface. This structural choice may lead readers to see it as a background context to the rest of the book. Next is a section with four chapters outlining Wholehearted Living and it's central tenets. These chapters define Wholehearted Living and the attributes which this book will seek to cultivate in readers in order to help them on their Wholehearted journey. The last of these chapters is dedicated to "The Things That Get In The Way" in order to prepare readers for some of the challenges they may face on that journey. (31)
