As they rode north, Will wondered about the flash of emotion he saw flicker across Francis' face when he learned that the countess was coming. He was curious but didn't ask. Will figured everyone was entitled to his own secrets. Will was secretly planning to meet with his father but he hadn't told Crawford. When Will and his father finally did meet, it was hardly paternal. Wat tried to convince Will to come home but his thoughts were jumbled and his reasoning obscured by emotion.
