Summary

In Chapter 11, Cee went to D.C. to visit her “college roommate, Reena” (110). On the train, she noticed the ways in which people interacted with one another. When she overheard an attractive man introduce himself as Wayne to a nearby woman, the “train slammed to a stop” (111). Cee reminded herself “Wayne was dead” (112).

Cee considered telling Reena about seeing Wayne’s doppelgänger, but knew Reena would distort the story. They had had a fraught relationship ever since Cee noticed Reena’s racial prejudices. Reena had also made hurtful comments about Cee’s mother and Cee’s trauma.

Later on, Cee returned to the hotel where Charlotte was drinking and reminiscing with her friend Eve. The women discussed Vigil. Cee noticed the way Charlotte bucked when Eve mentioned her daughter. Cee stepped on Charlotte’s hair, wanting to...
