Summary
The narrator begins this section by recounting a conversation she had with a neighbor, in which the neighbor describes how a herd of Tiberian mastiffs were abandoned by their owners, packed into a truck, and died. The narrator then wonders if “a dog understand[s] betrayal?” (90). The narrator continues to speculate, guessing that “the intensity of the pity you feel for an animal has to do with how it evokes pity for yourself” (92). The narrator goes on to remember the time she had to put her cat down. Just before the cat receives the shot, the narrator imagined the cat said, “I didn’t say I wanted you to kill me, I said I wanted you to make me feel better” (94).
