Summary

The Doughtys and Andrew relocate to a considerably-sized estate in Upton Park and settle into the routines of life there. However, the political situation in England grows increasingly contentious around the subject of colonialism and slavery, leading to a series of uprisings in the colonies. Andrew privately feels as though the efforts to “reform” the system constitute a no-man’s-land between freedom and lack of it. In the meantime, he begins to fall in love with Mrs. Doughty’s nurse, a white woman named Elizabeth. Kathryn allows them to be married, and they have several children. During this time, the Doughtys’ son Henry passes away.
