Summary

In Chapter 56, Ben introduces Daniel again to Paco Lobo. Lorenza brings Ben cigarettes, and the two stop talking as she “hovers” nearby. Daniel reveals his mistake in going to Ana's house. Ben was sent to the Valley of the Fallen but says he will not report on it, citing the fact that some 40,000 bodies will be exhumed and placed on the forest floor and that people are dying in forced labor camps working on the project. By the time Ben finishes giving Daniel information about the horrors people endure under Franco's regime, Daniel is concerned with the knowledge that Franco specifically invited Martin to Spain to do business with him.
